The South Tynedale Railway is the highest narrow-gauge railway in England, running restored steam and diesel trains up the South Tyne valley from Alston into the North Pennines. It follows the trackbed of the old Haltwhistle–Alston branch, a scenic few miles through moorland and over viaducts. Trains run seasonally, mostly weekends and holidays, so check the timetable before making the trip out.
