A stone inn in Alston, which likes to call itself England’s highest market town, up in the North Pennines. The Cumberland Inn is a real-ale stop with rooms, handy for the old lead-mining country around Nenthead and the narrow-gauge South Tynedale Railway. Alston station, the line’s terminus, is barely a few minutes’ walk away.
