Garrigill is a remote village gathered round a green in the upper South Tyne valley, high in the North Pennines. Walkers on the Pennine Way drop down to it after the long moorland haul over Cross Fell, and the source of the South Tyne lies not far up the dale. Alston, England’s highest market town, is about four miles down the valley.
