Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

Killhope, high at the head of Weardale, is the best-preserved lead-mining site in Britain, its enormous waterwheel still turning beside the old washing floors. You can tour the surface buildings and, if you fancy it, pull on wellies for a guided walk into the underground mine. There’s an admission charge, and it sits well over 400 metres up, so it can be cold and closes over winter — check dates before making the trip. Remote, but a cracking day for anyone drawn to industrial history.

Full name: Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum
