Alston sits at around 300m up in the North Pennines, sharing the title of England’s highest market town with Buxton. A steep cobbled street of stone houses climbs the hill, and the town is the northern terminus of the narrow-gauge South Tynedale Railway, which runs up the valley towards Slaggyford. It makes a handy base for the high Pennine country around Nenthead and Garrigill.
