Stanhope is the market centre of Weardale, sat on the Wear with a ford and stepping stones you can still cross when the river’s low. In the churchyard stands the fossilised stump of a tree many millions of years old, dug from a nearby quarry. The heritage Weardale Railway runs from the station here up the dale.
