Edmundbyers is a small moorland village on the southern edge of Derwent Reservoir, handy for walks and birdwatching along the water. Its little church of St Edmund has pre-Norman roots and sits slightly apart from the houses. A high, breezy spot; the nearest station, Riding Mill, is around 11km to the north.
