The Weardale Railway is a heritage line running up the dale between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, calling at Wolsingham and Frosterley through farmland and old quarry country. Steam and diesel services run on set operating days, with seasonal specials, so it’s worth checking the timetable before you turn up. Fares apply. Stanhope makes a handy end of the line, with the village and the River Wear right there for a wander.
