Hamsterley Forest fills a valley on the edge of the Durham dales with around two thousand hectares of woodland, threaded by walking routes and a well-known set of mountain-bike trails. There’s a visitor centre, a café and family-friendly paths along the beck, plus graded descents for riders who want them. The forest is free to walk, though the car park takes a charge. The village of Hamsterley lies just to the east.
