Facing the green in the pretty Teesdale village of Romaldkirk, the Rose and Crown is a smart 18th-century coaching inn that leans into good food and comfortable rooms. It’s more of a dining destination than a spit-and-sawdust local, and a lovely place to stay a night while you explore the dale. Middleton-in-Teesdale is just up the road.
