The capital of upper Teesdale, Middleton-in-Teesdale grew when the Quaker-run London Lead Company moved its northern headquarters here from Blanchland in the early 1800s, leaving orderly terraces and an ornate cast-iron drinking fountain of 1877. It’s the natural base for the High Force and Low Force walks upriver. The nearest station is a fair way off at Frosterley, around 14km.
