Places to explore in MonmouthshireWales · South East Wales
Monmouthshire is border country, greener and gentler than the coalfield valleys to its west. The River Wye carves a wooded gorge along its eastern edge, past the roofless Cistercian arches of Tintern Abbey that so moved Wordsworth and Turner. In the north-west the outliers of the Black Mountains rise sharp above Abergavenny — the whaleback of Sugar Loaf, the landslipped ridge of Skirrid Fawr and the Blorenge over the valley. Few places in Britain are so thickly castled. Chepstow guards the Wye's mouth, Raglan shows off late medieval swagger, and the Three Castles of White, Grosmont and Skenfrith once held the Welsh march together.
