Sugar Loaf, or Y Fâl in Welsh, is a cone of a hill rising to 596m above Abergavenny, on the southern edge of the Black Mountains in Bannau Brycheiniog. For all the pointed look from below, the walk up is gentle and short, mostly over bracken and grass, which makes it one of the busier tops in the area on a fine weekend. The land is common, owned by the National Trust, so access is open and the paths are well worn. From the summit the ground falls away on every side for a wide view over the Usk valley and across to other Black Mountains hills like Bryn Arw.
