Tucked into a courtyard of converted sheds in Abergavenny, the Gaff is chef-owner Dan Saunders’s small-plates restaurant, its weekly-changing menu built on seasonal produce and designed for sharing. Saunders cooked at the Michelin-starred Walnut Tree nearby before striking out here. The town is a natural launch point for the mountains, so pair a meal with a look at Abergavenny Castle or a stretch of the Beacons Way into Bannau Brycheiniog.
