The Holy Mountain above Abergavenny, a landslip-torn hill with a ruined chapel on its long summit ridge

Ysgyryd Fawr, known in English as the Skirrid, is an outlying hill of 486m standing apart from the main Black Mountains above Abergavenny. Its whole western side slipped away in an ancient landslide, leaving the broken slope and deep notch that give the hill its jagged profile. People have long called it the Holy Mountain: a chapel dedicated to St Michael once stood on the summit, and a couple of upright stones are all that remain of it. The climb is short but steep, with a fine airy walk along the narrow top. The land belongs to the National Trust, and the Beacons Way passes close by on its route through Bannau Brycheiniog.
