Deep in the Vale of Ewyas under the Black Mountains, Llanthony is a roofless Augustinian ruin and a glorious one — a row of pointed arches marching down the nave, the west front standing close to full height. Canons settled by 1118 and were gone by 1539. The prior’s lodging at the south-west corner became a small hotel, with a vaulted cellar bar underneath, and the twelfth-century St David’s Church nearby still serves the parish. Cadw looks after the ruins and entry is free. The Beacons Way runs past the gate.
