Down in the Escley valley, where a lane crosses the brook by Michaelchurch Escley, the Bridge Inn makes a well-placed stop for walkers in the Black Mountains foothills. There’s a riverside garden, food through the day, and rooms if you want to stay over. It’s genuinely remote, with the Welsh border ridges rising just to the west, so the drive in is half the point.
