The Golden Valley

The Golden Valley is the run of the River Dore through western Herefordshire, a stretch of farmland, small churches and castle earthworks below the Welsh hills. The name is a happy mistake: the river’s Welsh name comes from dŵr, meaning water, which later ears took for the French d’or, gold. At its heart is Abbey Dore, where the church of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1147 still stands. Dorstone and Peterchurch string along the same valley floor. It’s open countryside, free to explore.
