A single capstone weighing more than 25 tonnes rests on a ring of nine uprights here, on the ridge above Dorstone in the Golden Valley. Arthur’s Stone is a Neolithic chambered tomb, built somewhere between 3700 and 2700 BC and stripped long ago of the mound that once covered it. Recent digs tied it to nearby Neolithic “halls of the dead” found in 2013. It stands in open fields in English Heritage’s care, free to reach on foot and open at any reasonable hour.
