The Old Black Lion is a 17th-century coaching inn on Lion Street in Hay-on-Wye, a couple of minutes from the castle and the town’s bookshops. Low beams and open fires set the tone in the bar, and it’s known locally as much for its restaurant as its rooms. A good base for the book festival or for walking Hay Bluff and the Gospel Pass.
