Places to explore in PowysWales · Mid Wales

The largest and most thinly peopled county in Wales, Powys is a great sweep of upland from the English border to the central mountains. In the south rise Bannau Brycheiniog, the old red sandstone escarpment topped by Pen y Fan, the highest ground in southern Britain. Northward stretch the empty Cambrian moors, the reservoir at Lake Vyrnwy and Wales's tallest waterfall at Pistyll Rhaeadr. Offa's Dyke Path traces the border past the book town of Hay-on-Wye, and Powis Castle presides over terraced gardens above Welshpool.
