Gerald of Wales kept his favourite residence at Llanddew in the 12th century, and the small cruciform church here, with its central tower, is thought to be the oldest in the old county of Brecknockshire. The ruins of the bishop’s palace stand alongside, with a vaulted well among them. It’s a few miles north of Brecon, and usually open by day.
