Montgomery is a tiny Georgian town on the English border, its brick-and-timber square overlooked by the ruins of a hilltop castle that repays the climb with a wide view. The centre is a conservation area made for a slow wander, and The Checkers has brought serious cooking to the town. Welshpool lies about 10km to the north.
