Some of the black-and-white in Berriew is paint. In the late 1830s the architect Thomas Penson remodelled houses here for the Vaynor estate, adding big chimneys and, on some, painting the brickwork to look like timber framing, an early example of the black-and-white revival. The cottages cluster round the churchyard and along the little River Rhiw, near where it joins the Severn, and the Montgomery Canal crosses the Rhiw on an aqueduct first opened in 1797. St Beuno’s church has marble effigies of Arthur Price of Vaynor Park, who died in 1597, and his two wives. A converted squash court holds the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture, full of Logan’s sculpture, mirrored portraits and jewellery, and open seasonally.
