Newtown grew on the Severn as a centre of the Welsh flannel trade, its riverside mills — the Cambrian chief among them — turning out woollen cloth through the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s also the birthplace, in 1771, of the reformer and mill-owner Robert Owen, remembered in a small museum in the town. The station sits just south of the centre.
