Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

The most elaborate of the Elan Valley dams, Craig Goch curves across the valley in a stepped Victorian wall pierced with overflow arches, and is often called the prettiest of the group. It’s the highest of the four dams built for Birmingham’s water supply between 1893 and 1904, reached along the open-access estate road above Rhayader. Free to visit, and the slow drive up past all the dams is the main event.
