Father Ignatius, an eccentric Anglican monk, built a monastery here in 1869, high in the Vale of Ewyas below Gospel Pass. The artist and typographer Eric Gill later took over the buildings, living here from 1924 to 1928 and cutting the Gill Sans and Perpetua typefaces during his time in the valley. The hamlet has a tiny whitewashed chapel as well. It’s a remote spot; Abergavenny station is a good 18km to the south.
