Black Mountain — the single hill, not to be confused with the wider Black Mountains range around it — is a 704m top of peat and heather right on the England–Wales border, at the eastern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons. It’s a broad, flat-topped moorland whaleback rather than a pointed peak, and the Offa’s Dyke Path runs straight along its crest. Most walkers reach it from Hay Bluff and the Gospel Pass to the north-west, following the long grassy ridge. The going is easy in good weather, but the ground up top is featureless and boggy, so it’s a simple place to lose your line in mist.
