The tallest waterfall in south Wales, dropping 27 metres over a lip you can walk behind
At 27 metres (about 90 feet), Henrhyd Falls is the tallest waterfall in south Wales, near Coelbren in the southern corner of Bannau Brycheiniog. The water spills over a hard cap of rock, and the path runs along the back of the gorge behind the curtain, so you can stand in the gap and look out through the falling water. Getting down is a steep, slippery descent into the wooded gorge, and a climb back up — the National Trust looks after the site. This is the edge of the Bannau’s waterfall country, a run of glens thick with falls (sgwd is Welsh for waterfall), among them Sgwd Gwladys to the south-east. Film buffs may know the fall as the entrance to the Batcave in a 2012 Batman film.
