What you walk into at Dore Abbey is the east end of a Cistercian abbey church — presbytery, crossing and transepts, kept roofed and pressed back into use as the village parish church by Viscount Scudamore, who reconsecrated it in 1634 and put in John Abel’s carved oak screen. The long nave beyond is gone, though two of its pillars stand out in the graveyard. Founded in 1147, this is the only English Cistercian house settled directly from Morimond. Open every day, no charge, and Abbey Dore Court Garden is a few minutes up the lane.
