Abbey Dore grew up around Dore Abbey, the surviving church of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1147 in the Golden Valley. After the Dissolution it fell derelict, until the 1st Viscount Scudamore restored it for worship in the 1630s and had the local carpenter John Abel build the great oak screen, dated 1633, that still divides the church. Free to visit, south-west of Hereford.
