Sir John Scudamore secretly married Owain Glyndŵr’s daughter in 1410, and the old Welsh rebel may have seen out his last years hidden at Kentchurch. The Scudamores still hold this fortified manor in the Monnow valley, its fallow-deer park recorded as far back as 1546 and the house remodelled by John Nash in the 1790s. A working estate near Ewyas Harold, open for guided tours by arrangement rather than turn-up-and-in.
