Mathern Palace was once a country house of the bishops of Llandaff. When Henry Avray Tipping took it on in the early 1900s he laid out an Arts and Crafts garden around it — walls, terraces and yew hedges knitting the old palace into its grounds — before he moved on to build High Glanau. It sits near Chepstow and opens on selected days. Chepstow station is under 3km away.
