Dewstow is unlike any other garden in Wales: a network of underground tunnels, ferneries and grottoes built for its Edwardian owner by the firm of James Pulham and Son, masters of artificial rockwork. The estate was broken up and the grottoes buried under spoil — some of it from building the M4 — and lay forgotten until a workman stumbled on an entrance in the 1990s. Restored since, it is open to visitors. Caldicot station is close by.
