Penallt’s old church sits apart from the village it serves, on high ground above the Wye gorge, with a low embattled tower. Getting there is part of the appeal: quiet lanes and wide views east across to the Forest of Dean. It shares the plateau above Monmouth with scattered farms rather than any village centre. The nearest station is Lydney, over the river, about 14km south-east.
