Newland gathers around All Saints, a big 13th-century church so grand for its Forest of Dean setting that it’s long been called the ‘Cathedral of the Forest’. Inside is a rare brass showing a medieval Forest miner. The Ostrich Inn next door is a good stop. Lydney station is about 10km south-east.
