Tintern strings along the Wye beneath wooded slopes, its Cistercian abbey — founded in 1131 and left roofless at the Dissolution — standing almost complete beside the river. The great church drew Wordsworth and Turner and helped launch the fashion for touring the Wye. Cadw looks after the ruins, and the Anchor Inn sits right by the abbey gates.
