Places to explore in Scottish BordersScotland · Southern Scotland
Rolling sheep country fills the Scottish Borders, where the Tweed and its tributaries thread green hills between the Southern Uplands and the English line. This was reiver country, fought over for centuries, and its castles and peel towers still stud the landscape, chief among them the grim Hermitage Castle. The four great medieval abbeys at Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso mark the wealth of the old wool trade. Walter Scott, who lived nearby, loved the outlook from Scott's View over the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills.
