Lauder is a small royal burgh on the Leader Water, its wide main street lined with old frontages and topped by a tolbooth. Just outside stands Thirlestane Castle, a turreted seat of the Maitland family with grand plasterwork ceilings, open in season. The Southern Upland Way passes through, so walkers crossing Scotland coast to coast come right down the street.
