Thirlestane Castle stands over the Leader Water at Lauder, a turreted pink pile held by the Maitland family since 1587 and now run by a charitable trust. Its parkland and woodland grounds make for an easy wander, with the castle’s grand interiors open at set times. Grounds open seasonally with an admission charge; Stow station is about 8km to the south-west.
