Galashiels is the workaday hub of the central Borders, a textile town on the Gala Water. Its big draw now is the Great Tapestry of Scotland, 160 hand-stitched panels running to 143 metres, housed in a purpose-built gallery that opened in 2021. The town sits on the Borders Railway, so trains run straight down from Edinburgh and the station is right in the centre.
