Sir Walter Scott sat as sheriff at Selkirk for over thirty years, and his courtroom on the market place is now a museum to him. The town, a hilltop royal burgh above the Ettrick and Yarrow, also produced the African explorer Mungo Park, and gives its name to the Selkirk Bannock, a rich fruited bun still baked here. There are wide Borders views from the top of the town.
