Out at a lonely crossroads in the Yarrow valley, the Gordon Arms is about as remote as Borders inns get, long associated with the poets James Hogg and Walter Scott. The moorland setting is glorious but isolated, and opening can be seasonal, so it’s worth checking before making the trip. The nearest station, Galashiels, is some 16km to the north-east.
