This towering statue of William Wallace was raised in 1814 — the earliest large monument to the patriot anywhere — commissioned by the Earl of Buchan and standing in woodland above the Tweed near Dryburgh. Carved from red sandstone, it’s a strange, weathered giant of a figure, reached on a short walk through the trees. Scott’s View and Dryburgh Abbey are close by.
