The old kirk at Smailholm is a small country church of Norman origin, much rebuilt but still serving the parish. It sits below the landmark of Smailholm Tower, the peel that gave the village its name and drew the young Walter Scott. A modest, out-of-the-way place worth a pause if you’re visiting the tower.
