Jedburgh’s great ruin is its abbey, founded around 1138 by David I for Augustinian canons and now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland — the roofless nave still stands tall above the town. Add Mary Queen of Scots’ House, where she lay ill in 1566, and the old castle jail museum, and it makes a proper day of history. The colourful frontages along the main street are worth the wander too.
