Hawick (say “Hoyk”) is the biggest of the Teviotdale towns and long the centre of the Borders knitwear trade, still turning out luxury cashmere. It also has the Borders Distillery, which opened in 2018 and brought whisky-making back to the town. Come in June for the Common Riding, one of the great Borders horse-and-flag festivals.
