A riverside path runs west from Peebles through Hay Lodge Park to Neidpath Castle, a tower house on a bend of the Tweed a mile out of town; it’s closed to visitors, but the path has good views of the castle. Back in the old royal burgh there’s a High Street known for its independent shops, the Chambers Institution’s museum and gallery, and the ruined Cross Kirk, founded in 1261. In the third week of June the town holds its Beltane Festival, with the Riding of the Marches round the old burgh boundaries and the Beltane Queen crowned on the parish church steps. The Glentress mountain-bike trails are just east of town, and Innerleithen is down the valley.
