Places to explore in Orkney IslandsScotland · Highlands and Islands

Green, treeless and wrapped in cliffs, Orkney lies just off Scotland's northern tip, more than seventy islands with around twenty inhabited. Its farmland holds one of Europe's richest concentrations of prehistory. The stone village of Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the nearby Stones of Stenness, and the chambered tomb of Maes Howe together form a World Heritage Site. Norse earls raised the red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral at Kirkwall. In the twentieth century the great naval anchorage of Scapa Flow shaped the islands, and the sea stack of the Old Man of Hoy still draws climbers.
