Backaskaill is a long curve of white sand on Sanday, the sort of beach you’ll often have to yourself. Good for a slow walk and for shell-hunting, and quiet enough that seals haul out along the tideline. Like everywhere on Sanday, it’s reached by the Orkney Ferries boat or an island-hopper flight from Kirkwall, so it takes a bit of effort to get to.
